What is Pinterest ??? (many things to many people - and now being referred to as "the fastest" growing business in the world.

If you are using social media for marketing. Pinterest is "simply" the best of all the referral tools wherever visual imagery is involved. The Pinterest keyword search ability is the best available. Here in UK we are about to witness Pinterest overtake Twitter in usage volume and marketing value. Whilst strongest in USA, European adoption is now growing fast + the user gender mix is balancing as men catch up.

How to implement Pinterest for Growth

Read this carefully then make your own assessment – Can Pinterest can be integrated in your marketing mix? - email me if you need any clarification before you start.

Important info to consider:

1. Pinterest pins can easily carry links to your website and spread around the web much faster than facebook or twitter.

2. The lead generation life of a good Pin is much, much longer that a tweet or post on any social media platform.

3. The content / not the date, is key – what your potential client sees is an image of your choice / design. Important keywords are included in a short description + a built in link is provided which takes the viewer directly to your own target page (the code which does this is embedded in to the pin and follows the pin when re-pinned). i.e If six people repin it and there are six cycles the same you have placed 6*6*6*6*6*6 copies = 46,656 advert copies linking to your website. If you are selling DIY tools it is best to pin on topic related pin board named (DIY Tools).  Selling cat stuff on a cat related board is best. My cat board is called (Noellas Cats). n is my wife of course!

4. Pins last longer than f&t posts and they combine visual imagery with important messages + can spread fast – the resulting traffic (if implemented correctly) is virtually immediate and longer lasting than traditional social media posts.

5. This is how Pinterest has become established, as the new marketing “must have”.

6. How? = They have got it right, they (Pinterest) are ahead of the game, they are growing fast, their infrastructure and software is world leading + their management is respected.

7. An increase of 40%+ in penetration in accounts of Fortune 500 companies over the last 18 months is proof of the concept and the implementation.

At a recent conference Ben Silberman CEO of Pinterest said this:

"Visual discovery will be a key part of the future and how we use our mobile devices will expand beyond just talking and taking photos"I think in the very near future, people are going to query the world around them all the time Silbermann said. It’s going to open up the possibility for retail experiences to happen anywhere at any time.

 A Comment from myself:

 Amazon and others know all this and the result is changing purchasing behaviour. The way the high street and business has operated for many, many years is changing fast. Here in Chester our High Street is loosing shops and the locals don't want this our debate is underway.

Whilst many believe that Pinterest is simply a form of personal entertainment it is NOT "that only".

So What is it - what "IS" Pinterest and why is it different

P is becoming a trend driver in the way peoples lives can now operate. Need something - click device – drone (in future) delivers - job done – you now have what you want – (a tool, a component, a new dress, piece of furniture, +++ whatever you need). You will benefit from reduced cost and more efficient distribution. The suppliers that win most will be the suppliers who appreciate / implement this first.

 What is changing

The whole experience of researching, comparing and purchasing is moving fast. Using Pinterest will save time and effect the fundamental economics of many activities.

Why and how can Pinterest do this?

Feeding obsessions and necessities. Pinterest has all the integrated features built in and working. You must now join the 1m+ businesses with "Pinterest for Business" accounts. You will be able to access the marketing features to promote your brand instantly + Most important is to integrate this in your current marketing mix seamlessly.

Important: - "Pinterest for Business differs from a Pinterest Personal Account". The added business specific features work well for marketing at low cost. The features are well thought over, they work and are built in as standard.

 

How to set up your business account

 

1.    Go to pinterest

2.    Change personal account to business - or - set up a "new" Business account (your chosen name is important)

3.    Understand and accept the terms of business

4.    Integrate the supplied codes into your website (you may need help with this - send me an email request for process help if you are using a web developer ensure he / she is familiar with the required process - I can help with this if necessary)

5. Delegate or learn yourself the creation of your own Pinterest for business image and functionality

6.    Inform / train any employees on use of these new services (what to expect and how to use it)

7. Understand Pinterest analytics (included) and implement a target / review based strategy

8. Build a following - watch the data - develop your useage - make sure integration - in your website is easy to use.

 

Different Terms of Service - Business vs Personal

The Pinterest terms of service differ  for a business, so be sure to read through them / understand them in relation to your own operation. All the differences reflect that you are using the account commercially.

The usage policy and guidelines remain the same. The etiquette remains the same however the "guidelines for commercial use" MUST be followed strictly. This is universal for all Business users. +++ Don’t Spam, Do accept AND reply to user comments promptly and keep in touch. Pinterest changes are implemented frequently without any significant notice.

This whole concept is relatively new and whilst Google has "advanced image search and analysis" it is Pinterest alone that are stealing the march towards dominance in image search and referral.

Marketing Materials

Pinterest gives you free use of their platform and publishes instructions / conditions regarding its use. Help is provided in the normal way. Pinterest do not diferentiate the useage regarding any particular industry or type of product. There are guidelines for use regarding both written content and imagery, all of these are normal but must be adhered to. Pinterest have control to stop your account if policies are abused / ignored.

Pinterest Analytics

This is one of the newest and already quite advanced features. Anyone familiar with other analytics will be able to make use of this easily for understanding what works best for you.

Tracking Information

When you verify your account, you get access to the important tracking information. You’ll be able to assess on-going impact of your own pinning strategies. This is vital to see which strategies work for your own market penetration.

Rich Pins

Rich Pins have additional information built in. The Pinterest system has a page for easy building of the rich pin and supplies a code with instructions regarding how to paste / integrate this into your own web page. Once this code is inserted – back on the page builder Pinterest verifies all is correct and working with each rich pin. (this process is virtually immidiate if all is correct). For this you require access to your website and some knowledge of how to update the code. (easy but I will deal with this in a separate article)

It is my own opinion that the success Pinterest is achieving is simply due to the excellent product they have conceived and produced.

Other advantages of the Business site

You can use your business name and can insert your website URL. There are tools which allow instant creation of code which allow Pinterest boards to be seemlesly integrated in web pages (as used here on this page). This is a great feature. (right click - view source - you can see the codes)

Searchability of your Pins

You can build in search words or phrases easily using descriptions and page titles inside or on pins and comments. #TAGS are also used easily.

Pinterest has been described / tagged by Social Media Examiner as a "visual search engine" but it is more than this.

Images that Work

One quick perusal of Pinterest is all that is necessary. It very soon becomes clear how visual a site it is. With such an emphasis on the visual impact, your images should become the cornerstone of anything you share here.

Connect with Your Other Social Media Platforms

When you create your business account it’s easy to connect your Twitter and Facebook accounts to your new Pinterest for Business account at the same time.

This will help you get more followers by tapping into the ones you already have on other platforms. It will also will help spread your content across platforms so more people see it. And, it will add Twitter and Facebook buttons to your Pinterest account.

Share Pins in your normal communications

Take any difficulty out of getting people to find your pins by sending the pins direct! Your communications are the perfect place to add your latest pins. This will help inform existing clients about your Pinterest account and can "of-course" the opportunity exists to encourage them to become followers.

SEO for Pinterest

You can use normal SEO strategies to optimize your pins for Pinterest searches. Follow these steps:

Step 1: Research keywords. Try Google Keyword Planner to find keywords related to your business.

Step 2: Add keywords to your pin titles.

Step 3: Add keywords to your pin descriptions.

Step 4: Add keywords to your pin (alt image) file names.

Calls-to-Action

In the same way you use a call-to-action in any copy, a "call-to-repin" can significantly increase the engagement of your pins.

Build Relationships and Gain New Followers

You will be able to see which pins are popular. The next step in Pinterest marketing is to use your pins to build relationships with followers and influencers that will help grow your audience.

Knowing what users look for when following other accounts will allow you to give them what they want and, in turn, grow your following (this info is available in a transparent way when you observe their own Pinterest boards)

The main factors that Pinterest users take into consideration in the "should-I-follow-or-not" decision-making process are:

·                           2. how many pins you have

·                           3.how many boards you have

To be on top of those factors and build relationships to grow your reach, you need to:

Post daily or twice daily

Many say you should post some 10-20 + new pins every day. Make sure you are not just repinning the content of others, but it is your own fresh content that will drive new traffic. (keep them on target with your goals)

Don’t pin all daily new pins at the same time. Spread your pinning if possible.

Tip! You can create a Secret Board and collect pins to save time. Load up your pins in the morning, and keep them on your secret board. Throughout the day, return to this board and grab the pins you want to pin on other “live boards.” Note: you can use "tailwind" to Manage this. This is a paid service with an allowed trial period - my own experience of this is positive and it is easily integrated.

Engage with Followers

Just like you respond to tweets, Facebook posts, and Instagram comments, engage with your followers directly by answering their questions and responding to their comments. Go the extra mile and address them directly, using their names to really take your customer service to the next level.

Comment on Your Followers’ Pins

Engagement is a two-way street. You need to reach out to your followers’ boards as well. Leave comments on their pins. This will ecourage followers to revisit your boards!

Follow and Engage with Popular Boards

The best way to see successful Pinterest strategy in action is to follow and engage with popular boards. You can learn a lot from the established players. See what kinds of pins they pin, what kinds of boards they have, and how much engaging they do. Your goal is to get on their level!

If you are commenting on these popular pins, your brand name will be seen by the huge number of people who follow those boards.

Tip! It’s a good idea to follow popular boards that are relevant to your industry and business as opposed to “just because” they are the most popular.  Here you can do yourself a favor and follow the boards that have a following closer to yours. It is your target market that is important to your sales.

Invite Others to Pin on Your Boards

Another board feature for marketing is the Open Board, which allows users to contribute their own pins. You have to give pinning access by adding their name or email. You, as the creator, of course, have full power, and your contributors cannot change the board name or description.

This feature is great for marketing because you get your community involved in a personal way.

Invite your followers and get big authority - if you can get industry experts and leaders to contribute to your boards all the better!

Build Relationships

Reach a wider audience and gain more followers by reaching out to others in your field.

You know that when you create a new account with Instagram or another social media platform, they ask if you want to “Find Friends” using your phone’s contacts or Facebook friends.

Boring I know but very important - here you can see the number of pins and boards, the number of followers and most importantly - you can see the ratio of following to followers I used... Every 10 seconds 80,000 new photos, comments and graphics are added to Pinterest - this is March 2018, the trend is upwards and the graph is not a straight line - there has to be a reason - Pinterest have "more" things right than wrong - "that's for sure" my own experimental testing reached 517,673 views in the last 4 weeks  + I have now recorded details of more than 150,000 potential purchasers!

It's 22/04 and I have completed my stage 2 work plan (version 2). I am recommending some tools for scheduling and some for developing infographics. This stage of my work has included demographics analysis and the profile of following + followers. There are some important tools which help to build a good understanding of this process. Tool 1. - free is "pinfollow" this tool allows some understanding of the important follower and following ratios and demgraphics. Tool 2 is "tailwind" a significant piece of software which links itself (given your permission) directly to your pinterest account and allows for automation of some important and time consuming processes. + The effect of joining group boards..

A few weeks ago I watched the interview with Jeff Bezos - (you can find the feed on my own pinterest/workshop wall) this is where I have pinned stuff with drawing pins for decades but now it is continuing on pinterest ! It sparked off an interesting discussion between Gideon (my son and me) not reaching any conclusion yet - typical! It's 23rd of June now and I have found the best way to find the "right" followers - talking to people all over the planet is not yet concluded - it's easy to understand why someone with a special idea gets followed a lot - but the weight of the followers / following is important (I think - will keep updating untill concluded)
